Ok seriously tho

Frodo doesn’t have any immediate family. he was however planning on telling his best friends that he was leaving the Shire forever (it just y’know, backfired a bit)

Sam told his family he was moving to Buckland. They presumably weren’t expecting him back any time soon, since Buckland is a long drive away and none of them travelled ever. It’d probably be at least a couple of months before anyone in Hobbiton was like ‘hey where did Sam go’

What, if anything, did Merry and Pippin tell their families. IIRC they both live with their parents?? did they provide any explanation? I feel like they must have said something so no-one would immediately panic when they didn’t come home but??

was it just normal for them to go away for long stretches of time? they obviously spent a lot of time at Bag End which is a long way from their respective homes? but Frodo’s house in Buckland was really close by Brandy Hall so you’d have thought someone would?? notice? that Merry wasn’t staying there? fairly quickly?

to be clear, I am not taking issue with Tolkien’s writing. I am taking issue with Merry and Pippin. what the hell guys. what the hell.

upon reflection i guess Fatty Bolger might have covered for them but if so how

upon FURTHER reflection like… they are respectively the HEIRS to buckland & tookland. Pippin is his parents’ only son and Merry is an ONLY CHILD. HOW UPSET MUST THEIR PARENTS HAVE BEEN WHEN THEY REALISED.

and like yeah the Shire doesn’t have any mass communication obvs and presumably it was fairly in-character for them to go off for long stretches to stay with each other or with Frodo or w/e but still.

The Shire has a fairly efficient postal service. it can’t have taken THAT long for someone to notice.

Esmeralda Brandybuck, writing to her brother: anyway that’s all our news. How’s Merry?

Paladin Took, writing back: is Merry not with you? did he tell you he was here?

Esmeralda: yes he said he was staying at Great Smials did he leave?

Paladin: I haven’t seen Merry for months WHERE IS PIPPIN HE TOLD US HE WAS WITH YOU

at some point, everyone just blames Gandalf.

“We’re going with Bilbo and Frodo to visit the Elves, back in a year or so,” maybe?

I mean, “Blame Gandalf” is probably reasonable in a lot of circumstances.
