Tumblr: We need more superheroes struggling with trauma and ptsd!

Marvel: *makes Iron Man 3, an unprecedented film in the modern comic book movie genre that openly depicts a superhero struggling with trauma and ptsd, as a direct result of their hero work*

Tumblr: We didn’t consent to this!

My problem with im3 is pepper. She treats tony like his ptsd is nothing more than an incinvenience to her AND IT IS LITERALLY NEVER QUESTIONED. Pepper is still considered one of the great love interests but she literally saw tony working endless nights, building a literal army of suits, building a suit specifically designed to come to him if he is in distress, having nightmares upon nightmares, and she basically just tells him to get over it or get over her.

So, tony stark having ptsd=amazing, good job, much approved. Pepper potts giving 0 shits about it=terrible, 0/10, failure.

Tony told Pepper about his nightmares after they had a tiff over date night. It’s right there in the first 10 minutes of the film. Every other time, he came down to tinker in his lab and the army of suits was HIDDEN under the house that no one, not even Pepper, knew about.

Pepper did not give Tony an ultimatum. Tony chose to get rid of his suits in the end because he understood they were a distraction, that there were better ways to cope with PTSD – i.e. not bottling up his feelings, like he did since Iron Man, hence the reason he opened up to Bruce.

They broke up in Civil War because Tony didn’t stop, couldn’t stop getting himself involved with the Avengers. And when he was literally at his lowest point? With a broken team, a broken best friend and an irrevocably broken friendship with Cap? She came back to him but I don’t see people ever acknowledge that.

I also don’t see people acknowledge the fact that she stayed on even when he built the new housing unit for the Bleeding Edge suit.

The only time Pepper walked away was when a suit attacked her, in her own bed, while she was trying to wake her boyfriend from a nightmare. The fact that so many people straight up ignore Pepper’s fear and hate her for not immediately coddling her boyfriend is mind blowing. It’s as if people are saying Pepper’s fears and anxieties do not matter next to Tony’s.

Also, Pepper’s job is not to constantly babysit Tony. She actually has to run a multibillion-dollar conglomerate so that Tony can continue to have the money he needs to build the suits to save the world.

^^^^

She doesn’t treat his PTSD like an inconvenience. She knows he’s effected by NYC, but she didn’t push him about it, and likely waited for him to open up on his own when he was ready. And when he finally did, she listened. Offered him support and physical comfort (the hug). And when she says the suits are “distractions” she isn’t dismissing them as his coping mechanism, but rather stating that he’s using them to ~avoid dealing with his trauma.

Also, so what if she also feels bad that he’s been neglecting her and pushing her away? That doesn’t make her terrible. It means that she cares about him and she wants to be there for him but she doesn’t want to pressure him into doing something he doesn’t want to/isn’t ready to do. But she can’t be there for him if he keeps pushing her away.

And ughhh I really hate when people treat her like she’s a heartless bitch in the nightmare scene. Like, Tony’s suit attacked her in her sleep. She was ~scared. She was angry. Tony was refusing to deal with his issues, and was, unintentionally of course, letting his coping mechanisms (obsessive suit building) to start hurting those closest to him. So yeah, of course she left the room. Had Tony’s suit not attacked her in her sleep, threatening her safety, and scaring the hell out of her, she 100% would have stayed and comforted Tony after his nightmare. She looked genuinely concerned when she was trying to wake him up before the suit attacked her.

Ugh I’m just so sick of the Pepper-bashing from some people. Tony isn’t an uwu. Stop hating on other characters for not treating him like a weak, over-sensitive uwu that can’t take of himself. He’s a grown ass man. And stop reducing their entire character to Tony’s personal nanny and nothing else.
