The great thing about fandom/internet friends vs. friends you meet out IRL, is that when you get to know people for the first time face-to-face, there’s this awkward process of trying to figure out juuuust how much of a dork they are, and how much you can nerd out before you scare them off. Like, you don’t wanna break out the real freaky shit right off. There’s always the impulse to hang back a little, as you try to gauge just how into a thing they are. But with fandom friends? You fucking met them in the garbage heap. You knew their fucked up narrative kinks before you even know their real name. They are screaming their passions into the void. Your friendship comes pre-loaded with already knowing the exact depths of each other’s depravity, and any ordinary-people-shit you have in common is just a bonus.
anon, that’s such a lovely headcanon!!! i can imagine that lee did like research cause he wanted to give gaara flowers but then learned a bunch about flowering cacti and fruit producing cacti and healing properties and which you can drink water from and which are poisonous and basically ended up being a surprising wealth of knowledge on cacti all because he really wanted to give gaara a really good “i’m happy youre alive” gift
What I deduce from the Boruto anime is that the Sand Siblings don’t see each other very often, and I have a bone to pick with that. I am actually convinced that the Gaara we’re seeing isn’t the Gaara we know and love. He was replaced with some inferior dumpster fire of a person that tries to play his part, but falls short. Let’s talk about this new Gaara, but let’s focus on his relationship with the kids:
Gaara’s Dream – All Gaara ever wanted was to spend time with his family. He didn’t want his power, he didn’t want to be Kazekage, he didn’t want fame or fortune or strings of lovers; his deepest, rawest desire was to have the privilege to spend quality time with his family, and to make friends. Despite this dream, he persevered by jumping through hoops to become the person his village needed him to be, to be Kazekage. Gaara threw away everything just so that he could build a future that opened the doors of hope for future children. That’s why it is downright unacceptable how he behaves in the anime.
The Children – So let’s look at the hard facts first: To my understanding Gaara adopted Shinki when he was a “young boy” as stated in the wiki, and yet Temari only admits to having met him for the first time when Shikadai and his teammates are training for the chunin exams; meaning that Shinki is about twelve years old when he first met his aunt.
My question is: WHAT HAPPENED IN THE REST OF THOSE YEARS? Why is it that Temari only seems to have been recently informed of her nephew? If she knew about him, then why did she refrain from telling her own son that he has a cousin? Did she just forget for like six years? Did Gaara forget to mention it? If that’s the case then are you telling me that even Kankuro somehow kept forgetting that Shinki was a person who probably should be acquainted with the rest of his family, and his heritage?

When does Gaara bring presents? How often does he visit? WHY DID HE NEVER MENTION SHINKI? This whole thing reeks of plot holes, and I’m about to fill them with these hands. Even Boruto refers to Gaara as “Uncle Gaara” and so I’m just confused that there’s a child who is happy to give a family title to a man who isn’t his relative, and yet somehow it just doesn’t seem like Gaara really interacts with any of The Leaf’s children? Am I just crazy?
Let’s look at the philosophical facts: The Leaf Villlage saved Gaara, and so I don’t really quite understand, or really want to understand, why Gaara wouldn’t encourage his son and nephew to be really good friends. I think Gaara would try and get them to be penpals because he would want them to understand that they can have friends from other villages, and that sometimes those bonds are life changing. It’s just like Gaara’s friendship with Naruto. I don’t see why Gaara wouldn’t want his son to have that, or his nephew. I just simply cannot accept that Shinki is this seemingly huge secret. It just doesn’t make any sense!
Putting an End to Boarders – To piggyback off my last statement; I thought Gaara’s whole thing was to bring the countries together. I thought that his entire ideal was to make friends in other villages, to put aside the kind of nationalism that turned him into a monster, and to have a better world for the future generations. And yet for a man who is so about wanting the world united, he sure does have his hands buried deep in keeping Suna honorable. I mean look at how proud Shinki is of his village; it’s to the point of arrogance. Why would Gaara teach him that, or better yet, allow him to be that way?
You can’t even use the excuse that the other countries may not agree with the unity between The Leaf and The Sand because everything has changed, and all the Kages seem really relaxed and friendly with each other. So seriously, this whole stick up everyone’s asses in regards to privacy (especially hiding whole children) needs to stop. It’s either the world had changed or *shudder* Gaara is becoming like his father.
